This week, we are celebrating the random acts of connection that boost our happiness every time we come together here at Include. The impact that a sense of belonging can have on levels of loneliness is something that cannot be understated and something that is felt from all of us- staff, volunteers, carers, family, friends, support workers and members.Beth, a supported volunteer, says: "I wanted to get involved (with Include) because I was very lonely and I enjoy Makaton so much, and use it a lot personally. I want the world to know that there is no place anywhere that makes you feel so included, safe, comfortable, happy and purposeful as Include does."As a charity that recognises all forms of communication and the value of inclusion, every single connection that we can make is vital to the work that we do. The small moments are never overlooked- connecting through Makaton signing, connecting through nature on a Stroll & Sign, connecting through Zoom, connecting through speech and language therapy, connecting through a love of music... the list is endless, and we are grateful to be able to offer moments like these that help everyone at Include to feel a bit less lonely.#randomactsofconnection #lonelinessawarenessweek #charity #surrey #speechandlanguagetherapy #choir #music #inclusionmatters[Image Description: a collage of 9 images. 🌡 Let's talk VOLUNTEERS👉 However big your Charity / Museum / Heritage organisation is, have you got the right insurance to deal with volunteer and employee issues that get a bit spicy?! 👍 The case in point in Brixham will no doubt highlight for all charities the need for a discussion on Employment Practices cover (and limits) at the very least. 📞 Talk to PIB Insurance Brokers for great advice and appropriate insurance cover to protect your management team.#charity #charityinsurance #museum #museuminsurance #heritageinsurance #employmentpractices #pib #protectmanagement

When it comes to community engagement, good arts organisations punch way above their weight. I mean the type of engagement services would kill for. Here are some generalisations made from my lived experience of being involved in the community arts sector for many years…👉Artists are usually really invested in their practice – whether they get paid for it or not, and if part of that practice involves genuine engagement then they are equally invested in that outcome.👉They work bloody hard – often in cycles which people don’t always see.👉They are also often interested in the deeper things that matter to us as humans – the ‘soul’ and despite what some funding bodies might think, I know from my years at Milk Crate Theatre that ‘soul’ piece was very, very important to those who were struggling. It’s often overlooked.👉In complex times, art will ask the hard questions of us, and bring us together to feel our collective spirit. As noted in Jade Lillie and collaborators gloriously titled book "The relationship is the project" - “Community-engaged practice is not an art form. It’s not an add-on. It’s a way of working; a deep collaboration”And yet the funding for it in Australia is staggeringly low. As the recent "Artists as Workers: An economic study of professional artists in Australia" report demonstrated, many artists make their work and live below the poverty line to do so.After being affiliated for a few years, I recently joined the volunteer Executive Committee for Whale Chorus, a local Newcastle-based theatre company. I believe in this company and its vision.Like most arts organisations, it is run on the smell of an oily rag, combined with exceptional skill, passion and commitment. If you want to see what outcomes look like from a tiny, but committed local arts organisation -its role in the local community ecosystem – check out Whale Chorus’ Annual Report. The ratio of size to impact is pretty staggering. If it works for you, please support this important work to continue by going to the website https://whalechorus.com/ and making a tax-deductible donation.Janie Gibson Katerina Skoumbas#localart #placebasedarts #whalechorus

Did you know that many of our diversity, equity, and inclusion grant partners—like Mashup Rock & Roll Musical, Michigan Indian Legal Services, Northport Indian United Methodist Church, and Up North Pride—had never before received a Community Foundation grant? That might be hard to believe, but what we know to be true is the historically our funding hasn’t always been accessible to a broader variety of organizations in our region. Our diversity, equity, and inclusion funding has started to change this, bringing in applications from nonprofit organizations that wouldn’t have previously applied for support. Unlike many of our other funds, our diversity, equity, and inclusion funding can provides general operating support—a critical need for many local partners, especially smaller organizations with limited staff or volunteer capacity. The more we can grow our Endowment for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the more it can give back to our region over time.Your one-time or monthly gift of $20, $50, or $100 can help us go further in building our Endowment. Make your gift today to support a brighter future for all: https://lnkd.in/g5QX-4f6[Photo credit: Mashup Rock & Roll Musical // Image description: A scene from a Mashup Rock & Roll Musical performance.]#DiversityEquityInclusion #DEI #CommunityFoundation

As we approach the end of the year, I want to tell you a story that I hope to remember as a lemons-to-lemonade moment for me and Dance Wire. For the first half of 2023, we were feeling on a solidly upward trajectory. We had dialed in our operations and the programs we launched during the pandemic had fully taken shape and were starting to gain traction. We had also recruited a small business coach (shoutout to Kate Holly) to be on our board and had been working diligently with her to shed the scarcity mindset that runs rampant in nonprofits and arts organizations - because well, there is often a complicated mix of real and perceived scarcity to untangle in our sector. Then came the lemons. The summer was a brutal string of notifications from foundations who decided not to fund us, not to fund the arts, or not to fund anyone this year. Arts organizations in Portland and across the country were suffering. Then in late August we got a grant rejection that came with the feedback "the trustees just didn't feel the organization is where it should be after 10 years."At the time, I thought this comment had shattered my soul. As the founder who has worked so hard for the past 10 years to build Dance Wire to where it is - through what often felt like an insurmountable number of obstacles, including a global pandemic that had massive impacts on the dance sector - it felt like a huge punch to the gut to hear this.Oddly, here is where the good news comes in. While our institutional support was unraveling, our 1:1 Sessions were growing. We had a handful of Portland dancers enrolled in our 1:1 Sessions and then someone from Washington DC signed up, and then someone from Rome, Italy! Both found us online and said "THIS is what I've been looking for - support from people who GET dancers!"So after months of trying to reconcile the difference between the upward trajectory I felt Dance Wire was on and the downward spiral of funding, I realized something important. That grant decision, or even that comment, didn't shatter my soul, it shattered only the part of me that was allowing someone else to determine Dance Wire's value in the world. For so many dancers and artists or all kinds, the constant need to validate our work and our worth is exhausting and it chips away at our own ability to see it. And quite frankly, it takes away from our creativity. For Dance Wire 2024 will be about owning our value and supporting and validating all the dancers out there who need to be reminded that the unique talents they bring to the world are valuable. Please make a donation to help us ring in this new year with power and grace!Venmo: @dancewireWebsite: https://lnkd.in/gc_9dzdt

Hello! 🎉 We at Benvenuti Arts have been supporting artists and small arts organizations for almost 10 years, focusing on practical, tactical fundraising and administrative services. It’s clear to us, after all of this time, that fewer financial resources does not equate to lesser work; smaller groups are often so focused on their communities that things like grant writing, donor cultivation, or financial planning must be deprioritized. We want to help, even if you don’t have the resources to work with us directly. It’s with that in mind that we are relaunching our communications channels! With a core value to be of service to the small and mighty arts organizations and artists out there, we will continue with our consulting and capacity building services while building out our public channels to also provide some practical tools to anyone who needs them. It is our hope that more groups can benefit, even if they are not our direct client. So if you are looking for:📍 Industry articles along with our own thoughts, follow us here on LinkedIn. 📚 Practical tools and tips for arts administrators, as well as BA’s take on industry occurrences, check out our Blog.📥 Monthly lists of upcoming grants, links to resources, and other advice targeted to small arts groups and independent artists, sign up for our monthly newsletter.♻ Snippets from our trainings and workshops, and features from our clients, follow us on Facebook and Instagram.Additionally, our Clients and Members receive monthly emails with insights and guidance just for them. 👯♀️ We want to keep this information simple, informative, and, above all, practical. Just like our work with clients, these tools only work if you are able to actually use them! So we hope you’ll engage, provide feedback, and share anything you feel was useful to you. We’ll see you online! 🎭 🔮#benvenutiarts#fundraising#artsmanagement#IndieSpaceNYC#gallim#choralcameleon#developingartists#sozowithus#AlphabetRockers#BloomingdaleSchoolOfMusic#frigidnyc#kr3ts#forgottenfutures#btfa#concerttheatreworks#braataproductions
