Fawlty Towers cast now from heartbreaking diagnosis to tragic death (2025)

John Cleese discusses writing the Fawlty Towers scripts

Despite Fawlty Towers only lasting for two seasons, consisting of 12 episodes, it continues to be a staple in British TV.

Between 1976 and 1979, BBC viewers watched the hilarious chronicles of no-nonsense hotel owner Basil Fawlty, who was portrayed by John Cleese.

It wasn't long before people were hooked on Basil's trials and tribulations, with regular characters including his wife Sybil, waiter Manuel, and chambermaid Polly also featuring prominently.

Last year, fans of the comedy were thrilled when it was confirmed the show was being reprised by John Cleese and his real-life daughter Camilla, who will also feature in the show.

With the show making a return, we're taking a look at where the original cast is now, 45 years after the show ended.

Basil Fawlty - John Cleese

Although John was the main character in Fawlty Towers, the actor had a successful career beforehand, having starred in the likes of Monty Python.

When the show came to an end, the now 84-year-old went on to have a successful acting career, starring in A Fish Called Wanda, James Bond, Charlies Angles and Harry Potter.

In terms of his personal life, John married his first wife Connie Booth, who also stars in Fawlty Towers, in 1968. Three years later, they welcomed their daughter Cynthia Cleese into the world.

The pair later divorced and he married Barbara Trentham in 1981, with their daughter Camilla being born in 1984. Sadly their marriage came to an end and he ended up marrying American psychotherapist Alyce Faye Eichelberger and were married for 16 years before divorcing. He's currently married to Jennifer Wade after tying the knot in 2012.

John's remained in the spotlight over the years and has been vocal when sharing his thoughts on "woke" culture. Last year, he started presenting The Dinosaur Hour on GB News.

He often shares snippets of his life on Instagram along with throwback videos of his work.

Prunella has since retired from acting (Image: GETTY)

Prunella Scales - Sybil Fawlty

Prunella played Basil's wife Sybil in the sitcom and carried on acting after the show came to an end.

Although she briefly reprised her role in a sketch for Children in Need back in 2007, her last credited acting role was for a short film called Sub Rosa in 2014.

The same year, her husband Timothy West revealed she had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, putting an end to her acting career.

In terms of the Fawlty Towers reboot, Prunella's character appears to have been killed off. John Cleese told The Sun the episode starts with her death as he's about to read a eulogy.

He said: "Sybil dies and Basil goes to see his daughter because it was all part of a naughty affair that he once had with a guest at the hotel.

Outside of her career, Prunella and Timothy, who married in 1963, share two children together. Samuel West and their youngest son Joseph.

It appears as though Samuel has followed in Prunella's footsteps as an actor starring in the likes of Slow Horses and All Creatures Great and Small.

Speaking about his parents on a recent episode of Lorraine, he confessed they were both doing well, before adding: "My mother went on a cruise the other day, I'm not sure if she knew where she was."

Andrew Sachs - Manuel

Many people fell in love with Andrew's character on the show as the hilarious Spanish waiter Manuel.

He continued acting after Fawlty Towers and was well-known for his voice-over work.

After being a fan of Coronation Street, Andrew managed to get a role in the ITV soap in 2009 as Ramsay Clegg.

He appeared in a total of 27 episodes and also went on to appear in the likes of Casualty and EastEnders.

Sadly, the actor was diagnosed with vascular dementia which resulted in him being unable to speak, with him having to use a wheelchair.

At the age of 86, the star died while in a care home as his wife, Melody Lang, shared a touching tribute.

In 2016 she said: "My heart has been broken every day for a long time. It wasn't all doom and gloom, he still worked for two years. We were happy, we were always laughing, we never had a dull moment. He had dementia for four years and we didn't really notice it at first until the memory started going.

"It didn't get really bad until quite near the end. I nursed Andrew, I was there for every moment of it. Dementia is the most awful illness that sneaks in in the night when you least expect it".

Connie Booth - Polly Sherman

Connie was married to John for 10 years before they divorced in 1978. However, they continued to act alongside one another for the last season of Fawlty Towers.

The actress, who played the chambermaid in the show, carried on acting for a short while after the sitcom ended.

She appeared in the likes of The Deadly Game, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Return of Sherlock Holmes and Wizadora.

However, she decided to retire entirely from acting and went down a completely different career path.

For five years, she studied at the University of London and became a psychotherapist.

Currently, it's believed she lives in London with her husband John Lahr.
